Aaron Rodgers is not ready to walk away from the NFL just yet. After weeks of uncertainty surrounding his future, the veteran quarterback has decided to return to the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 2026 season. The decision gives Pittsburgh much-needed stability at quarterback as the franchise looks to make a deeper playoff run next year.

Rodgers extends NFL journey with Steelers

Rodgers has reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with the Steelers worth up to $25 million. The 42-year-old had been strongly linked with retirement after the end of the 2025 season, but eventually chose to continue playing.

His return also marks a reunion with head coach Mike McCarthy. The pair previously worked together for several successful years at the Green Bay Packers, winning a Super Bowl and building one of the league’s most successful quarterback-coach partnerships.

The Steelers had reportedly grown frustrated with Rodgers’ delayed decision, especially with offseason preparations approaching. However, the franchise finally received confirmation before organised team activities began.

Steelers back Rodgers despite age concerns

Rodgers delivered a solid campaign for Pittsburgh last season, throwing for 3,322 yards along with 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He helped the Steelers win the AFC North division and secure a playoff spot.

Despite those numbers, Pittsburgh’s season ended disappointingly after a heavy Wild Card loss to the Houston Texans. Questions were also raised over Rodgers’ long-term fitness and durability because of his age.

Still, the Steelers believe his leadership and experience remain valuable for a squad aiming to end its playoff-win drought. Pittsburgh also added young quarterback Drew Allar in the draft, while Mason Rudolph remains part of the roster.

Even with other options available, Rodgers is expected to start as Pittsburgh’s first-choice quarterback heading into the 2026 NFL season.
