In a moving initiative ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have decided to reserve 11 seats at their home venue throughout the tournament in memory of victims of a tragic stampede incident. The symbolic number is being used to honour those who lost their lives and to stand in solidarity with affected families.
Speaking during a media interaction in Bengaluru on Tuesday, March 24, Rajesh Menon, Chief Operating Officer of RCB, explained the intent behind the tribute.
He said, “This is a small but meaningful gesture from RCB to honour the memories of those we lost. Cricket is more than just a sport for us, it is about the community, and we stand with the families affected.”
Menon further added, “Reserving 11 seats is symbolic. We want every fan walking into the stadium to remember that these lives mattered, and they will not be forgotten.”

Expanding on the franchise’s responsibility, he also noted, “As a team, we celebrate together in moments of joy, but it is equally important to stand together in moments of grief. This initiative is about empathy, remembrance, and unity.”
Why is the number ‘11’ significant?
The number 11, synonymous with a cricket team on the field, has been chosen deliberately to represent unity and collective remembrance. It reflects how every individual matters, just like every player in a team contributes to the whole.
Tribute ahead of the first home game
The tribute will begin during RCB’s first home game against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Players will wear jerseys bearing the number ‘11’ during the warm-up session, creating a visual moment of respect before the match begins.

The reserved seats will remain unoccupied during every home game. This silent gesture is expected to leave a lasting emotional impact on spectators, reminding them of the lives lost in the tragedy. RCB’s initiative highlights how sports franchises can play a role beyond entertainment. By acknowledging real-world tragedies, the team reinforces the emotional bond it shares with its fanbase and the larger community.
Fans reaction
Supporters have widely appreciated the move on social media, calling it “touching” and “deeply respectful.” Many fans expressed that such gestures make them feel more connected to the team.
Some users wrote that the tribute gave them “goosebumps,” while others said it was a reminder that “cricket is not just about winning trophies, but about standing together in difficult times.” Several fans also praised RCB for using its platform to spread awareness, with comments like “This is why we love this team” and “RCB shows what it means to care for its people.”
With this initiative, RCB may set an example for other franchises in the league to adopt socially conscious gestures. It underlines how the IPL platform can be used to spread awareness and empathy alongside sporting excellence.
