With the festive spirit of Bengali New Year in the air, East Bengal FC are set to host Bengaluru FC at Kolkata’s iconic Yuba Bharati Krirangan on April 16. However, the build-up has been anything but calm for the red-and-yellow brigade, as multiple off-field developments have stirred unrest in the camp.
Head coach Oscar Bruzon confirmed that captain Mahesh Singh Naorem has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to injury.

Bruzon emphasised that beyond his on-field contributions, Mahesh plays a vital leadership role inside the dressing room, making his absence a significant blow at a crucial stage of the campaign.
Coach fumes over controversial red card reversal
Bruzon did not hold back while addressing the All India Football Federation’s decision to overturn a red card issued to a Bengaluru FC player. He labelled the move “unprofessional” and criticised its timing—just 24 hours before kickoff.
According to him, such last-minute decisions disrupt tactical planning and undermine the league’s credibility, raising concerns about consistency in officiating standards.
Bipin Singh eyes a milestone moment
Winger Bipin Singh, who accompanied the coach at the press conference, is on the verge of a personal landmark. If selected, this will be his 150th appearance in the Indian Super League.

Reflecting on his journey from the I-League to ISL prominence, Bipin expressed pride and reaffirmed his focus on contributing goals and securing a win. Speaking about facing Sunil Chhetri, he acknowledged the veteran’s leadership but stressed that every point now carries massive importance.
Tactical focus and match outlook
Bruzon highlighted the need for a more compact defensive structure, especially to contain Bengaluru’s attacking threats like Ashique Kuruniyan and Ryan Williams. Despite recent setbacks, he remains confident about the squad’s rhythm and dressing room morale.
East Bengal currently sit fourth, having won four of their seven matches, while Bengaluru FC are fifth with four wins from eight games. With both sides level on points, this encounter could prove decisive in shaping the standings, as the winner will gain a crucial edge in the ISL table.
