Italy’s hopes of playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup may not be over just yet, despite their dramatic failure in the qualification stage. A fresh possibility has emerged as FIFA considers contingency plans amid uncertainty surrounding Iran’s participation in the tournament. The four-time champions were knocked out after a penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the European playoff final. However, developments involving Iran have opened a narrow window for a potential return.

FIFA explores backup plan

According to reports, FIFA is preparing for the possibility of Iran withdrawing from the tournament due to ongoing geopolitical tensions. If that happens, the governing body is expected to organise a special intercontinental playoff. The proposed format could involve two teams, each from Asia and Europe, specifically sides that narrowly missed out on qualification. Italy, given their standing and recent exit, could emerge as a strong contender in such a scenario. While no final decision has been taken, the contingency plan reflects FIFA’s effort to ensure the tournament structure remains intact if any qualified team pulls out.

Iran’s participation remains uncertain

Iran’s group stage fixtures are scheduled to take place in the United States, beginning with a match against New Zealand, followed by games against Belgium and Egypt. Concerns over security and logistics have led Iranian authorities to question their participation.

Iran had earlier requested a relocation of their matches to Mexico, but FIFA declined the proposal, citing logistical challenges. Gianni Infantino has maintained that matches will proceed as planned, expressing confidence that Iran will take part. However, statements from Iranian officials suggest the situation remains fluid, with participation dependent on security assurances.

A long shot for Italy

For Italy, any route back to the World Cup would depend entirely on Iran’s final decision. Even then, they would still need to navigate a playoff against other strong contenders. The situation underlines the unpredictable nature of international football, where off-field developments can reshape on-field opportunities. For now, Italy’s chances remain uncertain but not entirely extinguished.
