East Bengal FC seemed to be regaining momentum in the ongoing Indian Super League season after a morale-boosting win over Chennaiyin FC. The victory injected fresh hope into their campaign, with the Red-and-Yellow brigade beginning to climb out of the lower end of the table. However, just as things started to look promising, the club has been dealt a significant setback.
Mahesh Naorem ruled out after knee injury
Mahesh Naorem, one of East Bengal’s key Indian midfielders, has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after sustaining a knee injury during the Chennaiyin clash.

The midfielder was introduced in the 57th minute but lasted only around 10 minutes before being forced off the pitch, raising immediate concerns among fans and staff.
Club confirms major setback
In an official statement, East Bengal confirmed that Mahesh is currently under medical supervision, with assessments ongoing to determine the full extent of the injury. Early indications, however, suggest that he will not return this season.
The club also assured full support for the player during his recovery, acknowledging the magnitude of the blow at a crucial juncture of the campaign. The news comes at a time when East Bengal had just received a boost with the return of Kevin Sibille and Mohammad Rashid from injuries. While their comeback strengthened the squad, Mahesh’s absence now creates a fresh imbalance in midfield.
Big test awaits against Bengaluru FC
East Bengal now face a stern challenge as they prepare to take on Bengaluru FC at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan. The clash gains added significance, especially against a side led by Sunil Chhetri.
