Marie-Louise Eta made history in European football, but her landmark debut as interim head coach of Union Berlin ended in a narrow 2-1 defeat to VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.

At 34, Eta became the first woman to manage a men’s team in one of Europe’s top five leagues, a breakthrough moment that signals progress in the sport. However, the occasion was overshadowed by the result, as Union Berlin struggled to capitalise on home advantage against a side battling relegation.

Early setback proves costly

Union Berlin fell behind early when Patrick Wimmer opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Wolfsburg extended their lead just after the restart, with Christian Eriksen setting up Dzenan Pejcinovic for a composed finish.

Despite a late push, Union could only manage a consolation goal through Oliver Burke, leaving Eta’s side with little time to mount a full comeback.

Tittle race and european spots heat up

Elsewhere in the league, TSG Hoffenheim secured a dramatic 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund, thanks to two penalties from Andrej Kramaric, including a stoppage-time winner. The result dealt a blow to Dortmund’s title hopes and strengthened Bayern Munich’s grip at the top.

With a significant points gap, Bayern now need only a win or draw against VfB Stuttgart to secure another league title, underlining their continued dominance in German football.

Allegri rules out italy role

Away from Germany, Massimiliano Allegri addressed speculation linking him to the Italy national team job. The AC Milan coach dismissed the rumours, stating his preference for stability and his intention to remain with the club.

As Union Berlin regroup under Eta’s leadership, the focus will now shift to how the team responds in the coming fixtures. While the result was disappointing, the significance of Eta’s appointment remains a milestone moment, potentially opening doors for greater inclusion in top-level men’s football.
