Technology may be transforming football across the world, but former India international Alvito D’Cunha believes the fundamentals of the game remain unchanged. The East Bengal legend says tools like VAR have improved decision-making in modern football, yet he insists the real focus for young players should remain on discipline, hard work and time on the training ground rather than digital distractions.

VAR has improved decision-making in football

D’Cunha admitted that when technology first entered football, he was not entirely convinced about its impact on the flow of the game. The former winger initially believed tools like the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) might slow down matches by interrupting the natural pace. However, his perspective changed over time as technology began helping referees make more accurate decisions. “Earlier I thought technology like VAR might slow down the game, but today it has helped football grow a lot,” talking to exclusively News Ei Samay he said.

He also referred to famous controversial moments in football history, including the “Hand of God” goal by Diego Maradona and the disallowed strike by Frank Lapard in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, explaining that VAR could have changed those outcomes.

The former East Bengal star hopes Indian football will soon adopt the technology as well. “We are all waiting to see when VAR will finally be implemented in Indian football,” he added.

Advice for youngsters: focus on the pitch, not phones

Beyond technology, D’Cunha stressed that the biggest challenge for young footballers today is maintaining focus. According to him, distractions such as smartphones and excessive screen time are affecting the dedication required to succeed in professional sport.

“Stay away from your devices and spend more time on the ground if you want to become a footballer,” he advised.

D’Cunha believes hard work, discipline and hours spent training on the field are still the most important factors in shaping a successful football career. “Phones will not help you achieve your dream, hard work on the pitch will,” he said, urging aspiring players to remain committed to their goals.
