The controversy unfolded on April 5, 2026, during the 3-3 draw between FC Andorra and Málaga CF, when tensions spilled into the tunnel at half-time. According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, citing the referee’s official report, Piqué confronted the assistant referee immediately after the whistle.

Match referee Alejandro Olaso Valera documented the incident, stating, “Immediately after the end of the first half, whilst in the tunnel leading to the changing rooms, Mr Gerard Piqué Bernabéu approached the first assistant referee in an aggressive manner, shouting and pointing his index finger at him just a few centimetres from his face.”
Strong words
The report further highlighted the language used by Piqué during the altercation. As quoted via Mundo Deportivo, the defender repeatedly shouted, “This is a historic robbery” and “I’m going to post this on Twitter.”
These statements were cited as key factors in determining the severity of his conduct, underlining both the verbal aggression and the public nature of his threat.
Altercation escalates
Referee Olaso Valera also noted that the situation extended beyond the officiating team. In his report, he added, “This individual also behaved in an abusive manner towards members of the Málaga club, and members of the Andorra club and security personnel were forced to separate them.”
The involvement of multiple parties and the need for intervention further aggravated the disciplinary case against Piqué.

RFEF disciplinary action and fine imposed
Following a review, the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s Disciplinary Committee announced its decision on April 7, 2026, imposing a 12,000 fine on the former FC Barcelona defender.
The decision also comes amid reports of repeated incidents involving Piqué this season, with Mundo Deportivo noting a similar episode during a December fixture against Deportivo La Coruña.
The report suggested that FC Andorra had already been under scrutiny for disciplinary issues, and Piqué’s involvement in multiple incidents may have influenced the committee’s firm stance. The latest sanction reinforces the federation’s intent to curb misconduct, especially from high-profile figures in Spanish football.
