The anticipated release of Apple's foldable iPhone may take much longer than originally expected because of problems encountered during initial tests at the engineering stage, according to an analysis published by Nikkei Asia.
The California-based firm has reportedly been experiencing some challenges at the engineering test stage, making the manufacture and shipment of its first foldable gadget unlikely.

Initially, it was thought that the debut would be timed for the unveiling of the iPhone 18 range this year. But the new information suggests that this will take several more months.
Testing phase proves critical
Sources cited by Nikkei Asia said more complications than expected have emerged during early test production. The ongoing engineering verification test, scheduled through April and early May, is seen as a crucial phase for resolving these challenges.
“More issues than expected have emerged during the early test production phase, and additional time will be needed,” a person familiar with the matter told the publication.
The delay is reportedly linked to engineering difficulties rather than supply chain shortages. Apple and its partners are said to be working under a tight timeline to stabilise design and performance.
Some component suppliers have been informed of possible changes in production schedules, though updates have not been uniform across the supply chain.
Expected design and features
The upcoming foldable iPhone will have a dual-screen display consisting of a small external display screen and a big internal foldable display screen.

According to reports, Apple seems to be concentrating on creating a new display screen that would minimize the crease effect seen on the foldable screen. This, together with durability, is among the aspects Apple aims to achieve with the upcoming iPhone.
This particular iPhone will do away with Face ID authentication method to introduce a new one involving a Touch ID mounted at the sides of the phone. Additionally, it will have two rear cameras with a hole-punched front camera.
The foldable iPhone is projected to cost roughly $2,000.
