WhatsApp has started rolling out username reservations ahead of a wider feature launch later this year, marking one of the app’s most significant privacy changes so far.
The update will allow users to connect with people without revealing their phone numbers when starting a conversation, provided the username feature is enabled. WhatsApp said the rollout will happen gradually over the coming months and users will be notified in the app when the feature becomes available in their country.

your phone number is personal and sometimes you want to connect without handing it over. that's why we're introducing usernames for WhatsApp.

starting this week, you can reserve a username to use later this year when we launch the feature. It takes just a few seconds, make sure…
Why usernames are coming to WhatsApp
According to WhatsApp, the move is meant to make it easier for people to exchange contact details in situations where sharing a phone number feels too personal, such as meeting someone at an event, joining a group chat, or connecting with new classmates and neighbours.
The company said that starting this week, users can reserve a username for later use once the feature launches. Meta said the early reservation window is intended to help people secure names they want before wider availability creates more competition for common handles.
Timing is everything. Joined WhatsApp early enough to claim my username before we release this to the world. Time to get yours.

How the feature will work
The process will be available on the latest version of the app by going to Settings > Account > Username.
WhatsApp said it will not offer a searchable public username directory or suggestions, meaning other users will need to know the exact username before contacting someone for the first time.
To add another layer of control, the platform is also introducing an optional username key, which can be shared separately and will be required for others to message a user via username. If people need help choosing a handle, WhatsApp said a username generator will be available to suggest alternatives.
Who stands to benefit
WhatsApp also said the feature is being built with creators, small businesses and organisations in mind, especially those that want to keep a consistent identity across Meta’s platforms.
Eligible users will be able to reserve the same username they already use on Instagram or Facebook, according to the company. Meta said usernames are optional, so users who prefer to continue sharing their phone numbers can keep using the app as before.
When the feature is fully launched, first-time messages to a person or business will not reveal the sender’s phone number if the username setting is enabled.
