A decorative green dome atop the Pipraich Railway Station in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh was removed overnight following controversy sparked by a complaint lodged by a former councillor.
Dome triggers objections
The controversy revolved around the newly-constructed Railway station building in Pipraich, which falls in the North Eastern Railway's Varanasi division. A green dome was incorporated in the centre of the building as part of the new design, reported ABP Live.

However, soon after the installation of the green dome, it was noticed by many people that the building resembled a mosque following which Subhash Chand, a former councillor, lodged a complaint with the Railway authorities. In his letter to the General Manager, Chand alleged that the colour and design had led to confusion.
In his complaint to the General Manager, Chand further alleged that because of the green dome, some members of the Muslim community had begun offering prayers beneath it.
Structure removed overnight
Following the complaint, Tailway authorities removed the dome late at night. It was shifted to one side and placed on the roof. Officials have indicated that a dome in a different colour will now be installed in its place.
While the Railway administration has not issued a detailed public statement, reports suggest that an internal inquiry is underway to determine at what level the decision to install the green dome was approved.
Background of the construction
The new station building is part of ongoing Railway line doubling work between Gorakhpur Cantonment and Paniyahwa. Several platforms and station buildings along the route are being demolished and rebuilt under this project.

The old building of the Pipraich station was demolished and a new one was constructed in its place. According to reports, a dome was supposed to be a part of the new design, but the contractor covered it with a green asbestos sheet, giving it the appearance of a shrine, according to a report by ABP Live.
The controversy intensified after objections were raised publicly. Chand further alleged that the contractor, in collusion with Railway officials, had created a mosque-like structure by installing the green dome, ABP Live reported.
After the matter gained attention, the Railway administration acted and dismantled the dome during the night.
