Kolkata feels tremors as earthquake rocks Bhutan near Assam border

According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences, the earthquake measured 5.6 in magnitude and occurred at around 11.06 pm.

Residents in Kolkata and several parts of eastern and northeastern India felt tremors late Sunday night after an earthquake struck Bhutan, prompting people in some areas to step out of their homes as a precaution.

According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake measured 5.6 in magnitude and occurred at around 11.06 pm. The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometre (6.21 miles).

Epicentre located in Bhutan

The epicentre was located near Punakha in Bhutan, north of Assam. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) later reported a slightly higher magnitude and a different depth estimate.

"EQ of M: 5.8, On: 07/06/2026 23:06:43 IST, Lat: 27.627 N, Long: 89.660 E, Depth: 26 Km, Location: Bhutan," the NCS said on X.

The tremors were felt across a wide region, including parts of West Bengal, Assam, Sikkim, Bhutan and neighbouring Bangladesh.



Tremors reported across eastern and northeastern India

In West Bengal, residents reported feeling the shaking in Kolkata as well as in districts such as Siliguri, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar, reported Hindustan Times.

People in Sikkim's capital Gangtok and other parts of the Himalayan state also experienced the tremors. Several residents said the shaking lasted for a few seconds, leading many to rush outdoors, per HT.

The earthquake was also felt in parts of Assam and other northeastern states.

Despite the widespread impact area, there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to property.

Aftershocks follow main quake

The main earthquake was followed by a series of smaller aftershocks.

According to available data cited by HT, a magnitude 2.8 aftershock was recorded at 11.18 pm IST at a depth of 22 kilometre. Another aftershock measuring 2.4 in magnitude occurred at 11.52 pm IST at a depth of 18 kilometre.

Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity in the region. While the tremors were felt across several locations, no major disruption or casualties were reported at the time of writing.
