Son of Trinamool leader among three sentenced to life in Hanskhali gang rape and murder case

The Ranaghat sub-divisional court has sentenced nine people in the Hanskhali gang rape and POCSO case, awarding life imprisonment to three.

Ranaghat Sub-divisional Court announced sentencess in the Hanskhali gang rape case. The court convicted 9 people on Monday. On Tuesday, three people including the son of a Trinamool leader were sentenced to life imprisonment.

In April 2022, allegations arose against Sohel Gayali, son of a local Trinamool leader, and his friends for gang-raping a minor after inviting her to a birthday party in the Hanskhali police station area of Nadia and then burning her to destroy evidence. In the case that continued for three years, the court convicted 9 people on Monday based on evidence and investigation. The sentences were announced on Tuesday.

Who all have been convicted?

Those convicted are Samarendra Gayali, Sohel Gayali, Prabhakar Poddar, Ranjit Mallik, Surajit Roy, Akash Barui, Dipta Gayali, Piyushkanti Bhakta, Anshuman Bagdi. Braja alias Sohel Gayali was the main accused in this case. Ranjit Mallik and Prabhakar Poddar were his accomplices.

All three have been sentenced to life imprisonment in the gang rape case and 20 years imprisonment in the POCSO case. At the same time, Sohel Gayali's father Samar Gayali, Dipta Gayali, and Piyush Bhakta were accused of threatening the victim's family and sheltering the criminal. They have been sentenced to five years imprisonment. Three years imprisonment has been announced for destroying evidence.

Surajit Roy and Akash Barui have both been released today on a bond of 50,000 rupees. One was a minor at the time of the incident, so he has been released. Considering the age of the other person, the court said he will be kept under observation for one year. If his behavior is satisfactory during this time, he will be completely freed based on the probation officer's report. Anshuman Bagdi has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for destroying evidence.
