The chairman of Nabadwip Municipality, Biman Krishna Saha, was detained by police in the early hours of Saturday after a large stock of government relief materials was allegedly discovered in a club adjacent to his residence in Nadia district.

According to police sources, Saha was detained around 3:40 am and taken from his residence to Nabadwip Police Station for questioning.

The development followed a late-night raid conducted by police at Baralghat Sporting Club in Nabadwip at around 10:30 pm on Friday. Acting on a tip-off, officers searched the premises and allegedly recovered a substantial quantity of relief supplies, including tarpaulins, blankets and Tantuj sarees.

Local residents claimed that the materials, which were meant for public distribution through government relief programmes, had been stored at the club for an extended period. The allegations have been directed at Saha, as the club where the materials were recovered is located beside his residence.

Public anger erupts as chairman taken away

The detention sparked strong reactions from residents, with tensions escalating outside the municipal chairman's home during the early morning hours. As police escorted Saha to the police station, angry locals allegedly hurled water bottles and shoes at him. According to eyewitnesses, one of the shoes struck the chairman on the head.

There was a significant deployment of police officials and central security forces in the region during the operation, which indicated the apprehensions about the possibility of unrest following the recovery of the relief materials.

The case has led to outrage among the locals who are asking for justice for the illegal storage of government-provided relief materials.

However, Saha has denied all the allegations made against him. The municipal chairperson denied any allegations of storing relief materials illegally and corruption. Police have not yet disclosed whether any formal charges have been filed. The investigation is ongoing.
