The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday expelled two of its MLAs, Sandipan Saha and Ritabrata Banerjee, from the party’s primary membership with immediate effect. The action was taken over what the party described as “anti-party activities” and conduct considered harmful to the organisation’s interests.
In separate notices issued on June 1, the party stated that both legislators had repeatedly failed to attend meetings convened by the authorised party leadership, despite being elected as candidates nominated by the TMC.
Expulsion notices issued separately
The notices said the party leadership had reviewed the conduct of the two MLAs before taking disciplinary action. According to the statements, the competent authority of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) found that both leaders had engaged in activities and made statements that went against the party’s interests.

"After due consideration of the matter, the competent authority of AITC has decided to expel you from the (primary) membership of the Party with immediate effect," the notices said.
The party did not disclose the specific incidents or statements that led to the disciplinary action. However, the notices indicated that the decision followed internal discussions and assessment by the party’s authorised leadership.
Loss of party positions and responsibilities
The TMC also clarified that, following the expulsion, Sandipan Saha and Ritabrata Banerjee would no longer hold any position, responsibility or privilege associated with the party from the date the notices were issued.

The development comes as the ruling party in West Bengal continues to maintain strict disciplinary measures within its organisation. The notices stressed that the action was based on the MLAs’ repeated absence from party meetings and activities deemed prejudicial to the interests of the AITC.
No immediate response was available from either Sandipan Saha or Ritabrata Banerjee after the expulsion notices were made public.
