Who is Parno Mittra? Bengali actress and ex-BJP leader joins Trinamool Congress

Bengali actress Parno Mittra, who had joined the BJP in 2019, switches to Trinamool Congress ahead of the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections.

Bengali actress Parno Mittra has joined the Trinamool Congress party on Friday, in anticipation of the 2026 elections in West Bengal's Assembly. She was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2019.

Today, Parno Mittra joined the ruling party at Trinamool Bhavan in front of state Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya and Trinamool leader Jay Prakash Majumdar. While speaking on this day, Parno said, “Today is a very big day for me. My journey on a new path begins. I will work under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. I certainly joined the BJP six years ago. Things did not progress the way I had thought. People do make mistakes. The time has come to correct that, so I am joining Trinamool.”

Who is Parno Mittra?

Parno Mittra is a popular Bengali actress and politician. She had acted in numerous films and television series. She was born on 31 October 1985. She started her acting career with the popular television series ‘Khela’ from Ravi Ojha in 2007.

Achieving fame in the Bengali film industry

Parno rose to immense glory for her portrayal of ‘Ranjana’ in Anjan Dutta’s National Award-Winning film ‘Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbona’ released in 2011. This film was honoured with three National Film Awards, out of which two were given to Parno herself: Best Bengali Film and Special Jury Award. She then acted along with other stars in ‘Apur Panchali’ released in 2013, directed by Kaushik Ganguly, which was showcased as a film at the 44th International Film Festival of India, or IFFI.

Currently, she is working on Arindam Sil’s Indo-Bangla film ‘Balighawr’ and Pratim D Gupta’s 'Ahare Mon.’

Political journey

Parno Mittra joined politics in 2019 by becoming a part of the BJP. In 2021, she took part in the assembly elections of West Bengal from Baranagar but lost to Trinamool Congress’s Tapas Roy by more than 35,000 votes. Since then, she has been far from active politics, and it’s an important change that she has joined Trinamool Congress.
