The United States Navy has deployed F/A-18 Super Hornet and EA-18 Growler for military operations against Iran. These aircraft are flying from carrier strike groups in the region and are conducting precision strikes, air control missions, and electronic warfare. Defence reports say the operations have targeted Iranian military bases, air defence systems, and other strategic sites.

The scale of these missions reflects the full combat capability of US naval aviation. These aircraft have carried out large strike missions against many positions in Iran. This shows how intense the carrier-based air operations are in the region.

About the F/A-18 Super Hornet and the EA-18G Growler

The F/A-18 Super Hornet is a carrier-based fighter jet used by the United States Navy. It can fight enemy aircraft, attack ground targets, carry out reconnaissance, and support aerial refuelling. Its advanced systems help it operate effectively even in heavily defended areas.

The EA-18G Growler is the US Navy's dedicated airborne electronic-attack aircraft. Built on the same airframe as the Super Hornet, it is specifically designed to disrupt enemy radar networks, communications systems, and missile guidance infrastructure. It is the primary tool for suppressing air defences before strike missions begin.

What do the F/A-18 Super Hornet and the EA-18G Growler do?

The F/A-18 Super Hornet is a crucial aircraft in US naval strike operations. It carries out precise attacks on ground targets. It also engages enemy aircraft in air combat. The jet provides escort protection to other naval aircraft. In the current operations against Iran, each carrier air wing has three squadrons with 12 aircraft each. This shows its key role in offensive air missions.

The EA-18G Growler is deployed at the start of strike missions. It weakens enemy air defence systems. It jams radar signals and blocks communications. It also disrupts missile guidance networks. This makes it safer for F/A-18 Super Hornet and F-35C Lightning II to carry out precision strikes. In the Iran campaign, Growlers have played a critical role in degrading Iranian surveillance and air defence capabilities.

Key specifications of the F/A-18 Super Hornet and the EA-18G Growler

The F/A-18 Super Hornet is about 60.2 feet long and 44.9 feet wide. It stands 16 feet tall and has a maximum take-off weight of 66,000 pounds. It can reach a top speed of Mach 1.6. The aircraft can fly above 50,000 feet. It can carry a bring-back payload of up to 9,900 pounds and is powered by two F414 engines.

The EA-18G Growler has the same airframe size as the F/A-18 Super Hornet. It is 60.2 feet long, 44.9 feet wide, and 16 feet tall. It can reach a top speed of Mach 1.8 and fly above 50,000 feet. Its recovery weight is about 48,000 pounds, and it produces 44,000 pounds of thrust. It carries an advanced onboard jamming suite designed for full-spectrum electronic warfare.

How do these aircraft work together?

In joint operations, EA-18G Growler aircraft lead by suppressing Iranian air defences and disrupting surveillance systems. F/A-18 Super Hornet jets then carry out strike, escort, and counter-air missions. F-35C Lightning II aircraft support the formation with stealth and advanced sensors to improve targeting. This strategy shows the United States Navy's focus on carrier-based air power and electronic dominance in contested regions.
