The United States has cleared military sales worth more than $8.6 billion to several Middle Eastern allies, including Israel, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, as tensions in the region remain elevated.
Multi-billion dollar defence package
The approvals were announced by the US State Department and cover a range of defence systems and services. According to Reuters, the package includes Patriot air and missile defence support for Qatar valued at about $4 billion, along with precision-guided weapon systems.

Kuwait is set to receive an integrated battle command system worth roughly $2.5 billion. Meanwhile, Israel and the UAE will be supplied with Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS), which are guided rocket systems used in modern combat.
Major defence firms involved
The contracts are expected to involve leading US defence companies, including RTX, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems. These firms are likely to play key roles in manufacturing and delivering the equipment.
Emergency approval route used
A notable aspect of the move is the use of emergency powers to expedite the process. The US administration bypassed the usual congressional review procedures, citing urgency.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio justified the decision by pointing to immediate security requirements linked to the evolving situation in the region.
Context of rising regional tensions
The approvals come amid an ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran. Although a ceasefire has held in recent weeks, tensions remain high, and security concerns continue to shape policy decisions.
Reports suggest that the conflict has already impacted US military resources, with some deliveries to European allies reportedly delayed to prioritise needs in the Middle East.
