A major controversy has erupted ahead of IPL 2026, with former India spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan announcing his sudden retirement from BCCI commentary duties. However, it is not just the exit that has grabbed attention, but the serious allegations he has raised against the system.

Shock exit and explosive claims

Sivaramakrishnan revealed on X, that despite being associated with commentary for over two decades, he was consistently overlooked for key on-air roles. Claiming that he wrote, “If I have not been used for TOSSES and PRESENTATION for 23 years and new comers come in do pitch report Tosses Presentation even when Shastri was coaching, what do you think could be the reason.”

According to him, the pattern remained unchanged since the Shastri era,His remarks hinted at a long-standing bias within the system, raising questions about how commentators are selected for prominent roles.

The controversy escalated when a fan suggested racial bias as a possible reason behind his exclusion. Sivaramakrishnan responded affirmatively, indirectly accusing the BCCI setup of discrimination based on skin colour an allegation that has now sparked widespread debate.

Ashwin’s reaction adds fuel

The situation took another turn when Ravichandran Ashwin reacted with a sharp remark, questioning why Sivaramakrishnan had not stepped away from IPL commentary as well. The comment reflects the strained relationship between the two, which has been evident over the years.

Sivaramakrishnan had previously criticised Ashwin’s performances, once controversially stating that “anyone can take wickets on Indian pitches.” Their differences have resurfaced, adding a personal dimension to an already heated issue.

Sivaramakrishnan, once a teenage prodigy, made his Test debut at just 17. He picked up 26 wickets in nine Tests and 15 in ODIs, while also enjoying a solid first-class career with 154 wickets and five centuries.

His latest statements suggest that his retirement is “just the beginning,” hinting at further revelations. As the IPL season approaches, this controversy could cast a shadow over the broadcasting ecosystem and raise uncomfortable questions for cricket authorities.
