The Uttar Pradesh (UP) Board of Secondary Education has announced that it will be introducing step marking. The introduction of step marking is expected to make the evaluation more transparent and fair, especially for subjects where answers have to be more elaborate.

What is step marking?

Step marking is an evaluation method where students are awarded marks for each correct step in their answer, rather than only for the final result. This means that even if the final answer is incorrect, students can still earn partial credit for the correct process.

For instance, in subjects such as Mathematics and Science, every step of calculation will be awarded marks. Similarly, for theory-based questions, if the answer is well-structured and logically explained, it will be more fairly evaluated. This ensures that there is no complete loss of marks due to minor mistakes.

Why was the change introduced?

The board has cited multiple reasons behind this decision. One of the key objectives is to ensure fair evaluation. Students who understand concepts but make small errors will now receive due credit.

The move is also expected to encourage conceptual learning over rote memorisation. By rewarding the process and reasoning, the system pushes students to focus on understanding rather than memorising answers.

Additionally, the step marking system aligns the UP Board with modern assessment practices followed in various competitive exams and educational boards.

How the system will work

Under the new system of awarding marks, the question would be divided into various steps. Then the marks would be awarded to the students.

Teachers would be trained to ensure proper evaluation of the answers. It is especially important for the teachers to be trained so that the checking of the answer scripts is proper.

Subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Economics are expected to be most impacted, as they involve multi-step problem solving.
