Travellers visiting Malaysia may soon experience much faster immigration checks as the country plans to introduce its new National Integrated Immigration System (MyNIISe) across airports and entry points from September 2026. Under the new system, immigration clearance is expected to take only four to five seconds per passenger, helping reduce long queues and congestion during busy travel periods.
Why is Malaysia calling new immigration system a ‘game changer’
Malaysia’s Home Affairs Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail praised the new technology and said the immigration process at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) now takes less than five seconds at the autogate. The government believes the digital system will improve airport efficiency while making travel smoother and more convenient for passengers.
"The implementation of the integrated digital system MyNIISe together with the use of autogates at KLIA is a major step by KDN in strengthening national border management," he wrote on X.
The new system uses facial recognition technology, QR codes and passport verification to speed up immigration checks while maintaining security. As per NDTV reports, officials believe the technology will help reduce airport congestion and improve the travel experience for passengers. Ismail described the upgrade as a "game changer". "This is not just a system upgrade. This is a game changer in the experience of entering and leaving the country," he added.
MyNIISe will replace the older MyIMMs system that has been used at Malaysian airports for nearly 20 years. According to NDTV, reports say the new digital platform was developed at a cost of around MYR 1 billion, which is approximately USD 255 million.

How does Malaysia digitally verify travellers under MyNIISe
As per NDTV reports, the new MyNIISe system combines different technologies into a faster and more advanced digital process. Travellers can now clear immigration using facial recognition, QR codes and passport verification, making the process quicker and smoother.
Instead of depending mostly on passport scans and fingerprint checks, the system quickly matches a traveller’s face and travel details with digitally stored immigration records to confirm their identity.

What steps is Malaysia taking to modernise airport security and customs
At Kuala Lumpur International Airport, separate customs lanes have been introduced to make passenger checks easier and more organised. “Nothing to Declare” lanes are for travellers who are not carrying restricted or taxable items, while “Goods to Declare” lanes are meant for passengers carrying items that need customs approval.
Along with the new digital immigration system, the Malaysian government is also increasing the number of officers under the Malaysia Border Guard initiative. More staff at major airports and entry points are expected to improve security, monitoring and crowd management.
