Bharti Airtel has introduced advanced 5G slicing capabilities for customers on its Priority postpaid plans, bringing a technology already being used in several global markets to India. The company says the feature is aimed at improving network consistency and reducing congestion in crowded areas.

What is 5G network slicing?

5G network slicing is a technology that allows telecom operators to divide a single physical network into multiple dedicated virtual layers for different types of users or services. Instead of all internet traffic moving through the same layer, operators can allocate resources more efficiently based on demand.

Airtel explained that the technology helps create additional capacity where required, making the network more efficient while improving reliability for Priority customers.

The concept can be compared to a highway system where a separate emergency or transit lane is created. This helps traffic move more smoothly without disrupting other vehicles on the road. Similarly, 5G slicing separates high-priority traffic from regular usage patterns to improve overall network performance.

How can it improve network efficiency?

According to Airtel, the slicing capability uses intelligent and dynamic resource allocation to optimise existing spectrum usage. This helps reduce network congestion and maintain a stable internet experience even in high-traffic locations.

The company said the technology could be particularly useful in airports, offices, business districts, crowded venues and large public events where network demand is usually high.

Airtel also clarified that the service is designed to optimise existing 5G capacity and is not expected to slow down the standard public internet experience for regular users.

Already in use globally

Slicing-based 5G services have already been launched in countries including the United States, Singapore, the United Kingdom and Malaysia. Airtel says the rollout brings India closer to the latest developments in advanced 5G technology.

The telecom operator also stated that the technology follows net neutrality principles because it does not prioritise or block specific websites or apps. Instead, it focuses on improving the overall network experience using available capacity.
