The National Testing Agency (NTA) has issued a clarification regarding the CUET UG 2026 re-allocation process after confusion among candidates over possible changes in exam dates and shifts. The agency has now stated that students will only be allowed to modify their examination state and city, while the allotted exam date and shift will remain unchanged.

The clarification came after many students raised concerns online regarding exam centres being allotted far away from their preferred locations. Several candidates had reportedly received centres in different cities and states, leading to travel-related difficulties ahead of the examination scheduled to begin on May 11, 2026.

NTA changes earlier decision

The NTA had initially opened a correction window allowing candidates to request changes in exam city, date and shift based on slot availability. However, within a short period, the agency revised its decision and clarified that only changes related to exam state and city would be permitted.

The updated clarification was issued after confusion spread among students over whether their examination schedule could also be altered. The agency said the previously allotted exam date and shift would continue without any modification.

Students report centre allocation issues

The issue gained attention after candidates complained that their allotted examination centres were located hundreds of kilometres away from their preferred cities. Reports stated that many students from states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Delhi were affected because of high candidate volume and limited seat availability.

Following the complaints, the NTA reopened the city allocation window to help affected students select alternative exam cities where seats were available. The reallocation facility was provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Over 15 lakh candidates registered

More than 15 lakh candidates have registered for CUET UG 2026 this year, making it one of the largest undergraduate entrance examinations in the country. The NTA said that 96.6 per cent of students received one of their preferred examination cities.
