C. Joseph Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor RV Arlekar again on Thursday as the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) intensified efforts to form the next government after emerging as the largest party in the Assembly election.
According to sources, Vijay reportedly informed the governor that he is prepared to prove his majority on the floor of the House. Sources also indicated that the TVK is considering legal options if the request to form the government is rejected again.

Majority numbers still under focus
Vijay had met the governor on Wednesday as well, but the attempt to stake claim was reportedly stalled over concerns about whether the TVK-led alliance had enough support to cross the majority mark in the Assembly.
The required number stands at 118 seats. Sources said the TVK is currently short by five seats, though support from the Congress could help bridge the gap.
There was speculation earlier in the day that Vijay could take oath as chief minister by the afternoon, but that did not materialise after doubts were raised over the numbers backing the alliance.
Smaller parties may play key role
The TVK is now trying to secure support from smaller regional parties. Among the names being discussed are the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, which currently has two seats, and the Pattali Makkal Katchi, which holds four.
The Left parties, Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist), together hold four seats and have also reportedly been approached.

If the Congress, VCK and Left parties extend support, the TVK-led bloc could reach 119 seats, crossing the majority mark by one.
There has also been speculation about possible backing from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. However, sources said party leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami is unlikely to support Vijay despite discussions within sections of the party.
