The much-awaited sequel to Tumbbad now has an official release date. Makers of the film have announced that Tumbbad 2 will arrive in theatres on December 3, 2027. The announcement has generated excitement among fans who have been waiting for updates ever since the first film earned cult status years after its release.
The release date was revealed through an Instagram post shared by actor-producer Sohum Shah. The post featured a dark and striking poster that stayed true to the mysterious tone associated with the Tumbbad universe. Sharing the update, Sohum Shah wrote, “A sinful past, an ominous future. The hunger rises, the legacy of greed continues.”
The caption quickly caught the attention of fans online, with many reacting enthusiastically to the return of the franchise. The mention of greed and hunger also hints that the sequel may continue exploring the same dark themes that made the original film memorable.

A film that gained cult following
The first Tumbbad was released in 2018 and stood out for its unusual mix of horror, folklore and fantasy. While it was appreciated by critics at the time, the film gradually built a larger fan base through streaming platforms and word-of-mouth recommendations.
Over the years, Tumbbad became one of the most talked-about Indian horror films because of its storytelling, visuals and atmosphere. Many viewers praised the film for presenting a fresh cinematic world rooted in mythology while also examining human greed.
Its theatrical re-release in 2024 introduced the film to a new audience and renewed interest in the story. That also increased anticipation around the sequel.
What Sohum Shah said about the sequel
Speaking about the next chapter, Sohum Shah told NDTV, “Tumbbad has always been very special to me, and with Tumbbad 2, the idea is to take that world forward in a way that feels deeper and more expansive. We are building on the mythology and the atmosphere that audiences connected with, while exploring new layers within the story.”

Bigger scale planned for sequel
According to NDTV, producer Jayantilal Gada of Pen Studios has also spoken about the project, indicating that Tumbbad 2 is being mounted on a larger scale. Reports suggest the makers want to deliver a grand cinematic experience while preserving the haunting essence of the original story.
The sequel is being directed by Adesh Prasad. While plot details remain under wraps, the team appears focused on maintaining continuity with the first film’s tone while introducing new layers to the narrative.
