From heavy rain to rising heat, IMD warns of extreme weather across India

The changing weather pattern is being driven by the interaction between intense heat and incoming moisture, leading to unstable conditions in many states.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh weather alerts across several parts of the country as India continues to experience active pre-monsoon conditions. Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds and rising temperatures are expected to affect multiple regions over the coming days, as reported by NDTV.

Thunderstorms likely in north and east India

According to the IMD, Uttarakhand is expected to witness thunderstorms accompanied by wind speeds of 50-60 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 70 kmph.

Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are also likely across several states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand may experience stronger thunderstorms between May 9 and 10, with wind speeds likely to touch 70 kmph, per the NDTV report.

Northeast and southern states to receive more rain

The weatherman has predicted scattered to fairly widespread rainfall activity across Northeast India till May 9. Arunachal Pradesh may receive isolated heavy rainfall on May 12 and 13, while Assam and Meghalaya are also likely to witness heavy rain during the same period.

The report further stated that southern states are expected to remain under wet weather conditions for the next few days. Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Interior Karnataka may receive isolated heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning activity.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Rayalaseema are also likely to witness scattered rainfall and gusty winds through the week.

Heatwave warning for western India

While several states are likely to receive rain, temperatures are expected to rise gradually across northwest and central parts of the country.

The IMD said maximum temperatures may increase by 3-4 degrees Celsius across Northwest India till May 10. Maharashtra and parts of Northeast India could see temperatures rise by up to 5 degrees Celsius in the next few days.

Heatwave conditions are likely over Gujarat and West Rajasthan between May 9 and 13. Konkan and Goa are expected to continue experiencing hot and humid weather till May 9.

The weather department has not issued any warning for fishermen at present.
