Turn off the engine
Vehicle engines are small metal blocks that contain countless small combustion chambers inside them, while pushing the vehicle forward. While the vehicle is in Idle or Neutral at a fuel station, the combustion continues to happen. So keeping the engine on while refuelling the vehicle can pose a significant risk.

Stay outside the vehicle
Getting in or out of the vehicle can produce static electricity. During refuelling the vehicle, this electricity can cause a serious fire. That is why it is recommended to stay out of the vehicle.
Never fill the tank completely
Fuels, specially petro, require some space to expand. That is why it is recommended to stop refuelling once the nozzle clicks, stopping the flow. Fuel pump nozzles have an auto-cut mechanism in them, which prevents tanks from overflowing once the fuel reaches the tip of the nozzle.
Keep flammable objects away
Fuel pumps are not the best place to have something that contains any flame. It is advised to keep lighters and matchboxes away from the fuel stations. Activities such as smoking cigarettes at a station can have severe outcomes, as flammable fumes come out while refuelling vehicles, which can turn into a huge fire if it comes in contact with a lit cigarette.

The last thing to keep in mind is to stay focused. While phone signals causing any kind of fire is too good to be true. The main point behind keeping the phone down is to stay away from distractions, as fuel stations can have any kind of emergencies, which is why everyone is required to stay focused.
