Bengali sweets

History is woven into every dish in Bengal's culinary magic. Several foods from West Bengal are now celebrated on the world stage due to their GI tags. This label proves that these foods are found only in specific regions and their authentic taste cannot be replicated elsewhere. This not only protects tradition but also maintains the dignity of local artisans' work. Here's a look at the list.

Rasogolla

Kolkata's Rosogolla

Rosogolla tops the list of Bengali sweets. These soft, fluffy round sweets made from cottage cheese are boiled in light sugar syrup. From festivals to ceremonies, no Bengali celebration is complete without rosogolla. In 2017, this sweet officially received GI recognition.

Bardhaman Mihidana

Bardhaman's Mihidana

The name mihidana means extremely fine grains. This famous sweet from Bardhaman looks exactly like small golden pearls. It is made by frying a mixture of gram flour and rice powder in ghee and then soaking it in sugar syrup. The taste of this sweet is incomparable with the aroma of saffron and ghee. This sweet received GI recognition on March 13, 2015.

Bardhaman Sitabhog

Bardhaman's Sitabhog

Though sitabhog looks much like white rice, it is actually a delicious sweet. Cottage cheese and rice powder are mixed and cut into thin rice-like shapes. Sometimes small gulab jamuns or nikuti are mixed with it. Sitabhog and Mihidana both received GI tags together in 2015.

Malda Fazli Mango

Malda's Fazli Mango

Fazli mango is world-famous for its enormous size. A single mango can weigh up to nearly one kilogram. When ripe, its skin becomes greenish-yellow, and the inside turns light orange. This sweet and juicy mango is quite popular for making jams or pickles. Malda's Fazli mango was given GI recognition in 2008.

Joynagar Moa

Joynagar's Moa

Winter means Joynagar moa on Bengali plates. Joynagar in South 24 Parganas is famous for this sweet. Moa is made with puffed rice, date palm jaggery, cow ghee, and milk. The fragrance of date palm jaggery is the true identity of this sweet. This popular sweet received GI tag in 2015.

Bengali Thali

Regional Characteristics of Taste

Each food that has received the GI tag has a completely different taste and preparation methods. Due to this recognition, these Bengali sweets are popular worldwide.
