Why feet swell during pregnancy: US doctor explains causes and simple ways to ease discomfort

US doctor explains why many women experience swollen feet during pregnancy and shares simple lifestyle tips that can help reduce the discomfort.

Pregnancy brings many changes to the body as it prepares to support a growing baby. Hormones, blood circulation and several body systems adjust during these nine months. Because of these changes, many women experience certain symptoms that are considered normal during pregnancy. One of the most common among them is swelling in the feet.

Although it is common, experts say there are simple ways to manage the discomfort and make daily life easier during pregnancy.

Why do feet swell during pregnancy?

Dr Kunal Sood, a Maryland-based anaesthesiologist and interventional pain medicine physician, recently spoke about this issue in an Instagram video posted on March 8.

According to him, swollen feet during pregnancy are usually caused by fluid buildup in the lower parts of the body. As pregnancy progresses, the body naturally holds more blood and fluids to support both the mother and the baby.

Hormones also play a role. They relax the blood vessels, which can slow down the flow of blood returning from the legs to the heart. At the same time, the growing uterus puts pressure on the veins. Because of this, fluid and blood can collect in the feet and ankles, especially towards the end of the day.

Simple ways to reduce swelling

Dr Sood says that while swelling cannot always be completely prevented, a few small habits can help reduce the discomfort.

He suggests keeping the legs elevated while resting so that blood circulation improves. Wearing compression socks earlier in the day can also support blood flow and reduce swelling.

Light movement such as gentle walking or simple ankle exercises can help improve circulation in the legs. Drinking enough water throughout the day is also important, as proper hydration helps the body manage fluid balance.

The doctor also recommends limiting excessive salt and processed foods, which can contribute to fluid retention. Wearing comfortable, supportive footwear that does not restrict the feet can also make a difference.

While these steps may not remove swelling completely, they can help make pregnancy more comfortable and reduce the pressure and heaviness many women feel in their feet.
