Japan lifted the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup title with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Australia in the final, once again proving their dominance in Asian women’s football. Playing in front of a passionate home crowd in Sydney, Australia started brightly, but Japan struck early and then controlled the game with calm and precision. The win secured Japan their third title in recent editions and extended their strong record against the Matildas in big finals. While Australia pushed hard throughout, Japan’s composure under pressure and sharp execution made the difference on the night.

Early goal gives Japan control

Japan got their breakthrough in the first half when Maika Hamano scored with a powerful long-range effort in the 17th minute. That early goal allowed Japan to settle into their rhythm, focusing on structured passing and disciplined defending.

Even though they didn’t create too many chances after that, Japan never looked rattled. They managed the tempo smartly and stayed compact at the back, making it difficult for Australia to find space. Their defence and goalkeeper remained solid, ensuring the early lead stayed intact till the final whistle.

Australia’s fight ends in frustration

Australia showed great intent, especially in the second half, as they pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Backed by strong home support, they created a few promising chances but couldn’t find the finishing touch when it mattered most.

As the game progressed, the Matildas increased pressure and threw more players into attack, but Japan’s defence held firm. Missed opportunities ultimately cost Australia, leaving them disappointed despite a spirited performance. Japan, on the other hand, celebrated yet another major title, reinforcing their position as one of Asia’s top teams.
