The team management views Pandya as a vital asset for the 2027 ODI World Cup due to his ability to provide balance with both bat and ball. The fast and bouncy conditions in South Africa make a seam-bowling all-rounder indispensable, and Pandya fits that role perfectly, provided he can sustain his bowling workload.
BCCI sets clear expectations on bowling workload
According to a BCCI source quoted by The Times of India, Pandya must assure selectors of his bowling readiness. “Hardik is expected to play a big role in the ODI setup since the World Cup will be played on fast and bouncy pitches in South Africa. He can lend the perfect balance. But he has to convince the selectors and the team management that he will be available to bowl 10 overs.” The source clarified that while Pandya may not be required to bowl his full quota in every match, flexibility is key -“He may not be required to do so in every match. The captain may end up bowling him for 6-7 overs in most matches. But he should be available if the captain needs more from him.”
Competition grows with the emergence of all-around options
The selectors are also keeping alternatives ready. Among them is Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has been increasing his bowling workload in domestic cricket. This indicates that the team management is actively preparing backup seam-bowling options in case Pandya’s fitness becomes a concern.

There are encouraging developments regarding Pandya’s preparation, as highlighted by the BCCI source to TOI ,“Hardik has been increasing his workload. He has worked on his action to bowl in-swingers as well without compromising on pace. That’s why he has been entrusted to bowl with the new ball in T20S.”
The source further added
“He feels his body is ready to cope with the rigours of bowling 10 overs in ODIs. He understands his body well enough and is working towards staying fit to bowl 10 overs.”These improvements suggest that Pandya is actively working to reclaim his role as a complete all-rounder.
What does it mean for India’s ODI future?
India’s roadmap towards the 2027 World Cup is focused on building a balanced and durable squad. Pandya’s inclusion strengthens both batting depth and bowling options, but only if he can consistently contribute with the ball.
