A new era appears to be forming at the Santiago Bernabéu. With several veteran defenders nearing the twilight of their careers, Real Madrid is preparing for a significant overhaul at the back this summer. For months, the expectation was clear: Ibrahima Konate would arrive to anchor the next generation. But recent reports suggest that Madrid’s recruitment team may be ready to pivot.

Doubts over Konaté’s consistency

Konaté had seemed like the perfect market opportunity. The Liverpool FC centre-back is yet to agree a new contract and could be available on a free transfer, a strategy Madrid have mastered in recent years. His connection with former teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold, now at the Bernabéu, only strengthened speculation of a reunion in Spain. However, recent performances have reportedly cooled Madrid’s interest. Defensive lapses and mistakes leading to goals have raised concerns among decision-makers. For a side already grappling with inconsistency at the back, adding another defender struggling for form may feel like a risk rather than a solution. Madrid’s hierarchy appears keen on stability, aggression and leadership qualities, which are essential for a club that measures success in Champions League trophies, not transitional seasons.

Van de Ven and Schlotterbeck in the frame

Attention has now shifted toward Micky van de Ven of Tottenham Hotspur and Nico Schlotterbeck of Borussia Dortmund. Both defenders offer a similar profile: physical presence, pace in recovery and strength in aerial duels. Importantly, they also provide an attacking threat from set pieces, an area where Madrid have underperformed this season.

Financial considerations will play a decisive role. Schlotterbeck is believed to command a fee in the region of 50 million, while Tottenham’s reported 100 million valuation of Van de Ven could soften depending on circumstances. Market dynamics, including Spurs’ league position, may influence negotiations significantly. Whether Madrid ultimately chooses Van de Ven, Schlotterbeck or revisits Konaté remains uncertain.
