When Álvaro Arbeloa took charge of Real Madrid CF in January, he walked into a high-pressure environment with little time to settle. A packed schedule and a squad full of big personalities made the task even more complex.

Fast start built on trust and relationships

Arbeloa focused on building trust. Within weeks, that approach began to show results. Real Madrid secured key wins over teams managed by elite coaches like José Mourinho, Pep Guardiola and Diego Simeone. The team now sits within touching distance of league leaders FC Barcelona, while also progressing in the Champions League. Arbeloa himself admits that understanding players both personally and professionally has been key to the turnaround.

Vinicius and Valverde leading the revival

One of the biggest beneficiaries of Arbeloa’s approach has been Vinícius Júnior. The forward has rediscovered his scoring touch, netting 11 goals under the new manager after struggling for consistency earlier in the season. Arbeloa has encouraged Vinicius to play with freedom and confidence, a shift from the more restrictive approach seen under Xabi Alonso. Public backing from the coach has also helped restore the Brazilian’s confidence and commitment to the club. Similarly, Federico Valverde has flourished after being moved back into his natural midfield role. Previously used in unfamiliar positions, Valverde is now delivering goals and assists consistently, including standout performances in big matches.

Youth integration and tactical clarity

Arbeloa’s familiarity with the club’s academy has also played a crucial role. Having previously coached Real Madrid’s reserve side, he has seamlessly integrated young talents into the first team. Emerging players have been given opportunities on big stages, reflecting the manager’s belief in youth development. This has not only added depth to the squad but also injected fresh energy into the team.

At the same time, Arbeloa continues to adapt tactically, especially as injured players return. He acknowledges there is still room for improvement, with a demanding schedule ahead, testing the squad every few days. In just a short span, Arbeloa has transformed uncertainty into momentum at Real Madrid. By prioritising relationships, restoring player confidence and making smart tactical decisions, he is getting the best out of his squad at a crucial stage of the season.
