Tension in Raniganj after dumper hits cyclist; angry mob sets sand-laden trucks on fire, police launch probe

Several sand-laden dumpers were set on fire after a road accident triggered tension at a sand ghat in Raniganj on Monday afternoon. Police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

According to local sources, the incident began when a cyclist, Avinash Murmu, was hit by a sand-laden dumper while crossing the road. The vehicle reportedly fled the scene after the accident. Avinash sustained serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Accident leads to violence

Soon after the accident, local residents gathered at the sand ghat. The situation turned tense, and an agitated crowd allegedly set fire to multiple sand-laden dumpers.

The incident caused panic in the area and disrupted normal activities. Police personnel arrived after receiving information and intervened to control the situation.

Political reaction and allegations

At the time of the incident, BJP leader Agnimitra Paul was campaigning in Raniganj. After being informed, she visited the spot.

She alleged that illegal sand mining is being carried out in the area and blamed the ruling Trinamool Congress for it. She also demanded Rs 10 lakh as financial compensation and a job for the victim’s family.

Police have started an investigation into the incident. Further details are awaited as authorities look into both the accident and the violence that followed.
