Shillong Lajong FC will host Dempo SC in a high-stakes Championship phase clash of the I-League 2025–26 season at the SSA Stadium, Shillong, on April 26 (18:30 IST). With the league now entering a decisive round-robin phase featuring the top six teams, every match carries title implications. Shillong arrive with momentum and a realistic shot at the crown, while Dempo face a must-win scenario to keep their fading hopes alive.

Shillong aim to capitalise on momentum at home

Shillong Lajong begin the Championship phase placed third with 17 points, trailing Sreenidi Deccan FC by a point and leaders Diamond Harbour FC by five. With a maximum ceiling of 32 points, they are likely to require at least four wins to remain firmly in the title race. Their recent 6-1 demolition of Aizawl FC underlines their attacking sharpness and growing confidence.

Coach Birendra Thapa has emphasised defensive improvements following their earlier 3-0 defeat to Dempo, pointing to better structure and reduced errors. Shillong’s campaign has been built on balance, boasting one of the league’s best defensive records alongside a potent attack. Forward Gladdy Nelcen Sana continues to be pivotal, not just for his goals but also his ability to create space and link play, supported effectively by a dynamic midfield unit.

Dempo seek revival despite uphill task

Dempo SC enter the phase sixth with nine points, leaving them with a narrow mathematical path to the title. Their inconsistency, particularly in defence, has been a major concern, with 14 goals conceded so far. However, they remain capable of influencing the standings, especially against higher-ranked teams.

Head coach Samir Naik acknowledged the challenges of playing in Shillong, including travel fatigue and adapting to artificial turf, but remains confident in his squad’s preparation. Much of Dempo’s attacking threat hinges on Marcus Joseph, who has netted seven goals this season, accounting for half of the team’s total. For Dempo to compete effectively, greater attacking support from players like Richmond Owusu will be essential as they look to overturn recent setbacks and stay competitive in the Championship phase.
