Elon Musk has sparked fresh debate about artificial intelligence after warning parents to keep children away from the chatbot ChatGPT.

Musk issues warning about ChatGPT

In a post on the social media platform X, Musk said parents should “keep ChatGPT away from kids and the mentally unwell". The comment came as discussions around AI safety intensified following reports linking the chatbot to violent incidents.

The warning was shared while Musk responded to a post claiming that a school shooter had used the AI chatbot to plan a mass attack. According to reports circulating online, employees at the company behind the chatbot had noticed concerning interactions but allegedly did not alert authorities. Musk has been a frequent critic of the company behind ChatGPT, which is led by Sam Altman. The two tech leaders have publicly disagreed over the direction and safety of artificial intelligence development.

Shooting case and lawsuit add to AI safety debate

The controversy intensified after reports emerged that a Canadian school shooter allegedly interacted with ChatGPT while planning the attack, raising questions about how AI systems should handle dangerous queries.

According to reports, some employees had flagged the chatbot conversations earlier, but the company did not immediately contact law enforcement. The AI account linked to the suspect had reportedly been banned earlier, but the individual later created another account. The incident has also led to legal action. Families of victims in the shooting have filed a lawsuit claiming the chatbot maker had prior knowledge of suspicious activity connected to the attacker.
