Google has introduced a major update to Google Maps, bringing a new artificial intelligence feature called 'Ask Maps' to users in India. Powered by Gemini AI models, the feature aims to transform Maps from a simple navigation tool into a conversational assistant that helps users plan routes, explore places and make decisions more easily.
The company described the rollout as the most significant upgrade to the platform in more than ten years.

"Today GoogleMaps is getting its biggest upgrade in over a decade. By combining our Gemini models with a deep understanding of the world, Maps now unlocks entirely new possibilities for how you navigate and explore," the company said in a post on X.

What is 'Ask Maps'?
According to Google, Ask Maps allows users to ask detailed questions in natural language through text or voice. Instead of performing multiple searches, users can ask one question and receive a comprehensive answer.
The feature is built using Gemini AI models and draws on information about more than 300 million places along with reviews contributed by over 500 million users worldwide.
Ask Maps functions similarly to how users interact with the Gemini chatbot in Search or in the Gemini app. The feature is currently rolling out in English on Android and iOS, while Hindi support is expected soon, Google said.

How it differs from traditional Maps search
One of the key changes with Ask Maps is that users no longer need to search separately for routes, places and stops along the way.
For instance, instead of searching for directions and then looking up nearby cafes separately, users can ask a single query such as where to travel from one location to another, whether driving or public transport would be faster at that time, and where they could grab coffee on the way.
'Ask Maps' can compare travel options using live traffic conditions, estimate arrival times and recommend convenient stops along the route.
Help with planning outings and events
The feature is also designed to assist with planning social outings or gatherings. Rather than browsing multiple listings and review platforms, users can ask a single question describing what they want.
Ask Maps can then highlight relevant places by analysing reviews, popular dishes, atmosphere and other details, including whether venues offer parking or special facilities.
Personalised recommendations based on user history
Google says Ask Maps can tailor suggestions based on a user's previous activity within the app. It looks at locations that users have searched, saved or visited earlier to understand preferences.
