A statewide blackout mock drill will be conducted across parts of Punjab on April 24, aimed at testing emergency preparedness and response systems. The exercise, scheduled for the evening, is part of a broader civil defence initiative directed by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
What will happen during the drill?
The mock drill is expected to begin with the sounding of air raid warning sirens, followed by a controlled blackout in selected areas. According to officials, the siren will ring in a specific pattern to signal the start of the exercise, after which lights in designated zones will be switched off temporarily.

In addition to the blackout, various emergency response activities will be rehearsed. These include rescue operations, fire response, first aid, evacuation procedures, and traffic control. Authorities and volunteers from civil defence, police, and health departments will take part to simulate a real-time crisis situation.
Why the drill is being conducted
The primary aim of the exercise is to assess how well the civil defence system and local administration respond to emergency scenarios such as an air raid or sudden power outage. According to the reports of News18, officials said the drill is meant to âtest coordination among emergency response agenciesâ and evaluate public readiness during such situations. By recreating conditions like sirens and blackouts, authorities will also review communication systems, response times, and the efficiency of rescue teams in handling crises.
Public advisory and participation
Residents in affected areas may notice sirens and temporary power cuts during the drill. Authorities have urged people not to panic and to cooperate by following instructions, including switching off non-essential lights where required. Essential services, however, will continue to function normally.
As per the reports of News18, officials have emphasised that the exercise is only a preparedness measure and does not indicate any real threat.
Part of a larger preparedness effort
Such mock drills are conducted periodically across different states to strengthen disaster response capabilities. Similar exercises in other regions have also focused on improving coordination among departments and ensuring that both authorities and citizens are prepared for unexpected emergencies.
The April 24 drill in Punjab is part of this ongoing effort to enhance readiness and ensure a swift, organised response in case of real-life emergencies.
