Madhu Malhotra, a familiar supporting presence in Hindi cinema across two decades, died on March 13 at the age of 71. The cause of death remains undisclosed. Her last rites were conducted the following day at the Oshiwara Crematorium in Mumbai.
Malhotra built a strong reputation as a supporting actor in Bollywood, appearing in over 100 films. From the mid-1970s through the 1990s, she worked alongside some of the industry's famous personalities.
Who was Madhu Malhotra?
The veteran actress first appeared on screen in ‘Andhera’ (1975), a production by the Ramsay Brothers. Four years later, she entered into mainstream cinema through Shakti Samanta's ‘The Great Gambler’ (1979). In that film, she played the role of the sister of Amitabh Bachchan's lead character, Jay.

Her appearance in Subhash Ghai's ‘Hero’ (1983) was one of her most famous performances. She was also featured in the film's celebrated song ‘Lambi Judaai,' sung by Reshma. This became one of her most enduring moments on screen.
In the film ‘Satte Pe Satta’ (1982), she played the love interest of the character Budh, portrayed by Paintlal. The film featured various casts, along with Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Amjad Khan, and Shakti Kapoor. Madhu Malhotra also appeared in the song ‘Mausam Mastana’ from the same film.

Her work and legacy
Beyond mainstream entertainers, she appeared in films across several genres. Her credits include ‘Vishwanath’ (1978), ‘Karz’ (1980), ‘Shradhanjali’ (1981), and ‘Vidhaata’ (1982), as well as horror productions such as ‘Khooni Murda’ (1989) and ‘Roohani Taqat’ (1991). She collaborated repeatedly with directors Subhash Ghai and Anil Sharma.
According to a report of ET Now, filmmaker Subhash Ghai, who directed her in various films, shared, “a graceful and gentle personality whose expressive eyes could convey deep emotion on screen.” People who worked with her remembered her as a dedicated actor who performed every role with sincerity and grace, both on and off the set.
Her long career helped strengthen the tradition of character actors in Hindi cinema during its most successful years.
