Labour Day, also known as International Workers' Day or May Day, is observed every year on May 1 to recognise workers and their contributions across sectors. In India, the day carries both historical and social significance. However, a common question remains: Is it a nationwide holiday?
Is May 1 a public holiday?
Labour Day is observed in many parts of India, but it is not a compulsory national holiday. It is declared at the state level, meaning whether offices remain closed depends on the region.

States such as Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, West Bengal, Kerala, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Assam usually mark the day as an official holiday. In these areas, government offices, banks, schools, and some private institutions may remain shut. In other states, daily operations may continue as usual.
Are banks open or closed?
Banks typically remain closed in states where May 1 is listed under the Reserve Bank of India’s regional holiday calendar. Customers planning branch visits or cheque-related work should check local schedules in advance.
That said, digital services like online banking, UPI, ATMs, and mobile apps continue to function without interruption.
What about schools and colleges?
Educational institutions in states observing Labour Day often remain closed on May 1. Some schools may organise awareness activities or assemblies ahead of the holiday.
Private institutions may follow their own schedules, so it is advisable to confirm with the respective school or college.
Government offices and services
State government offices are generally closed in regions where Labour Day is observed. Central government offices may follow location-based holiday lists, depending on where they are situated.
Shops, malls, and restaurants
Most commercial establishments, including malls, restaurants, cinemas, and supermarkets, remain open, especially in cities and busy markets. Some places may offer festive discounts or deals.

However, smaller shops and local businesses might operate with reduced hours, depending on local practices.
Public transport and travel
Public transport services such as buses, metros, taxis, app-based cabs, and trains usually continue to run. In some cities, schedules may see minor changes due to local events or gatherings.
