India’s PAN card application process will change from April 1, 2026. New rules will replace the Aadhaar-based system for both new applications and updates.

CSC e-Governance Services India Limited flagged these changes in a post on X, urging citizens to prepare early. Those who delay may face additional documentation hurdles and complications. The post added a caption, “IMPORTANT UPDATE!! PAN Application Rules Changing From 1st April 2026. Apply Now Using Aadhaar Only Till 31st March 2026."

What changes from April 1?

The Aadhaar-only method will no longer be valid. Applicants must submit extra documents like a birth certificate, voter ID, passport, driving licence, marksheet, or affidavit along with Aadhaar.

The name on the PAN must exactly match Aadhaar, or the application may be rejected. New forms will be introduced, and old ones will not be accepted from April 1, 2026. Applications can be done through Protean, UTIITSL, or the Income Tax e-filing portal.

Beware of PAN scams:

The government has warned about fake emails sent in the name of PIB. These emails ask people to download an e-PAN card. PIB Fact Check shared this warning on X, "Have you also received an email asking you to download an e-PAN card? This email is fake... Do not respond to any emails, links, calls or SMS asking you to share financial and sensitive information."

Why do the changes matter?

A PAN card is a 10-digit ID issued by the Income Tax Department to track all tax-related details. It is also required for banking, tax filing, financial transactions, and business registration. The new document rules aim to improve verification. Citizens need to complete their PAN work before the deadline to avoid extra paperwork later.
