A horrific incident took place in Sonitpur, Assam, on Sunday evening when an ambulance crashed into a truck on National Highway 15. Police stated that the truck driver escaped after the tragic incident. Reportedly, seven people died on the spot, including a child.
The identity of the victims
The tragic incident occurred at around 8 pm on Sunday on National Highway-15 near Dhekiajuli, in Sonitpur, while the ambulance was transporting the patient along with the family from Tulip Tea Estate to Tezpur Medical College and Hospital. According to Sonitpur senior Superintendent of Police Barun Purkayastha, six people lost their lives at the scene of the accident, and one of the victims died while receiving treatment, reported Hindustan Times.
Senior Superintendent of Police Barun Purkayastha said, "Our team reached the spot immediately, and all injured people were shifted to the Dhekiajuli Community Health Centre, where doctors declared six brought dead. One person died later during treatment.”

The victims have been identified as Vijay Hansa (driver), Hari Madgi, Kunal Karmakar, Sanjita Nath, Bishwajit Nath and Sandhyachari Nath. The identity of the seventh victim has yet to be officially confirmed.
How did the accident happen
The senior Superintendent further said, “All were coming from Tulip Tea Estate for treatment when the accident occurred. Our teams carried out rescue operations and cleared the road. The injured were shifted without delay,” the officer said.
In the initial investigation, they found out the truck was travelling towards the Dhekiajuli stretch. It claimed that the driver ignored toll gates on the Nagaon-Tezpur route.

The senior superintendent, Barun Purkayastha, said, “The truck has been seized. The driver and handyman fled the scene and are being traced.” According to the police, the crash created traffic jams on the highway for a long time, although an investigation is still ongoing.
