The move is aimed at giving the team more exposure in the format ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, scheduled to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. More bilateral ODI series could be introduced to help players maintain rhythm and adapt to the demands of the 50-over game.
Kohli and Rohit remain key to India’s ODI ambitions
Despite the emergence of several young talents, experienced players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are expected to play a crucial role in India’s World Cup campaign. Both batters continue to be among the team’s most dependable performers in ODI cricket. The BCCI believes regular matches will help the senior duo stay in top form and provide stability to the batting lineup.

Another reason behind the push for more ODIs is the strong commercial value of India’s matches. Overseas cricket boards are keen to host India in 50-over series because the presence of stars like Kohli and Rohit significantly boosts ticket sales, television viewership and sponsorship revenues. As a result, India’s ODI tours continue to remain highly attractive on the global cricket calendar.
