For a long time, sharing a bed has been a subtle measure of the closeness of a relationship. However, a significant number of couples are now rethinking the traditional practice. Instead of losing sleep to have each other, some couples are now choosing to sleep in separate beds or even separate rooms. This phenomenon is being termed “sleep divorce.”

According to health experts, the trend is a result of a change of mind among people on the importance of sleep. Instead of being a luxury, sleep is now being regarded as a necessity that impacts physical health and relationships directly. According to medical experts and those in the psychology field, the practice does not mean a breakdown in relationships. Instead, it can mean a more patient and more relaxed relationship.

What exactly is ‘sleep divorce’?

The term “sleep divorce” refers to couples choosing to sleep in separate beds or rooms to improve sleep quality while remaining in a committed relationship.

Sleep specialists say several everyday factors can make sharing a bed difficult. Snoring, different sleep schedules, restless movement, late-night screen use or medical conditions such as insomnia can significantly disturb sleep. It is observed that sleeping apart, can get better sleep, make one feel more refreshed and avoid arguments about bedtime routines while still caring for each other.

The health impact of poor sleep

Poor sleep can weaken the immune system and reduce emotional resilience. Over time it can lead to fatigue, headaches and difficulty managing stress. Sleep specialists also note that long-term sleep disruption is associated with a higher risk of conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, weight gain and heart disease.

When both partners are consistently tired, small disagreements may escalate more quickly. In some cases, couples mistake exhaustion for relationship problems.

Can sleeping apart actually improve relationships?

Though the idea may seem counterintuitive, many experts say couples often report improved relationships after prioritising sleep.

When both partners feel rested, they tend to communicate more clearly and respond with greater patience. Emotional connection can improve simply because daily stress levels fall. Holistic life coach Richa Agarwal describes sleep as a reset for the nervous system, noting that chronic exhaustion can strain even healthy relationships.

However, specialists caution that communication is essential when making such a decision. If the arrangement happens without discussion, it may lead to feelings of rejection.

Maintaining shared routines such as spending time together before bed or waking up together, can help couples preserve emotional closeness while still protecting their sleep.

Fix sleep problems first

Doctors also emphasise that separate sleeping arrangements should not always be the first solution. Simple lifestyle changes may improve sleep for couples who share a bed. Earplugs, white-noise machines, limiting screen use before bedtime and treating snoring or sleep disorders can make a significant difference.

Persistent insomnia, loud snoring, extreme fatigue or frequent arguments about sleep schedules are signs that couples may benefit from consulting a sleep specialist or mental health professional.
