New workplace trends linked to Gen Z frequently appear on social media, and the latest one drawing attention is known as "lily padding". The term refers to the growing tendency among younger professionals to change jobs frequently, often within short periods.

For some observers, the trend raises concerns about commitment. For many Gen Z workers, however, it reflects a deliberate strategy to explore opportunities, develop new skills and understand what kind of work environment suits them best.

Why are Gen Z workers changing jobs faster?

Data suggests that younger employees are spending significantly less time in their early career roles than previous generations.

According to a report by Randstad cited by News18, Gen Z professionals stay in a job for an average of 1.1 years during the first five years of their career. By comparison, Millennials remain in a role for around 1.8 years, while Gen X averages 2.8 years and Baby Boomers about 2.9 years.

Frequent job changes do not necessarily mean a lack of long-term thinking. Many young professionals move on because they feel limited growth opportunities in their current roles. Switching positions allows them to expand their experience, gain exposure to different work environments and build skills more quickly.

News18 cited another research from Glassdoor which also highlights changing expectations around career advancement. Nearly 68 per cent of Gen Z workers say they would not pursue a management role unless the pay is significantly higher.

For many young professionals, additional responsibility without meaningful financial benefits is not seen as worthwhile.

Changing attitudes toward career paths

Broader economic and technological changes have also influenced how Gen Z views work. Rapid advances in technology, the rise of artificial intelligence and economic uncertainty have reshaped career planning for many young workers.

In a job market where long-term security is no longer guaranteed, some Gen Z professionals prefer flexibility. Instead of focusing only on titles, they often prioritise learning opportunities, stability and fair pay.

Finding the balance

The lily padding trend can present challenges for employers. Companies often view longer tenures as a sign of reliability and commitment. Hiring and training new employees can also require significant time and resources.

As a result, organisations may hesitate to invest heavily in workers who might leave within a short period.

At the same time, job mobility can help professionals discover their strengths and interests. Over time, a balance may emerge as workers gain experience and recognise when it makes sense to stay longer in a role and grow within it.
