Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has unveiled the teaser of his upcoming film Main Vaapas Aaunga, hinting at an emotional romance set against the backdrop of India’s Partition. The film features a strong ensemble cast led by Naseeruddin Shah, Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari and Vedang Rana.

The teaser, released on Friday afternoon, offers a glimpse of a nostalgic love story unfolding across two timelines. It opens with a voiceover by Diljit Dosanjh, who says, “Kahaani hai romantic” (It’s a romantic story), as visuals show an elderly and ailing Naseeruddin Shah lying in bed during his final moments.

The narrative then shifts to the past, suggesting that the story revolves around the character’s youthful romance. Netizens flooded the comment box with love. One commented, "Ik kudi zida nam mohabbat" as it features Diljit. Another commented, "Imtiaz Goat Ali is so back." Another commented, "Give it up for legends."

The film features Naseeruddin Shah, Sharvari and Vedang Rana
Sepia-toned visuals transport viewers to colonial-era Punjab, where Sharvari is seen sharing tender moments with a turban-clad Vedang Rana, who appears to play a younger version of Naseeruddin Shah’s character. Their romance unfolds through scenes set in open fields and college corridors, accompanied by a soulful track sung by Diljit.
The teaser takes a dramatic turn as the story hints at the tragic events of Partition. In one tense sequence set on a train, Vedang’s character shouts, “Main Vaapas Aaunga” (I will return), suggesting the couple’s separation during the violent upheaval of the time.
The teaser concludes with Diljit delivering a striking line: “Zinda bache toh like, share and subscribe. Hashtag partition” (If we live longer, then like, share, and subscribe. #Partition).
The film also marks Imtiaz Ali’s reunion with several of his longtime collaborators. Aarti Bajaj has handled the editing, Irshad Kamil has written the lyrics, and A.R. Rahman has composed the music for the project. Interestingly, the project marks Imtiaz Ali’s return to the big screen after six years. His last theatrical release was Love Aaj Kal in 2020.
Main Vaapas Aaunga is co-written by Imtiaz Ali and Nayanika Mahtani and produced by Applause Entertainment, Window Seat Films and Mohit Choudhary. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on June 12.
