IPL ticket prices may rise this season after GST hike: Here’s what fans should know

The GST on IPL match tickets was increased from 28% to 40% in 2025, placing them in the highest tax bracket, which could make stadium tickets significantly more expensive for fans.

The upcoming IPL 2026 season may see higher ticket prices for fans attending matches in stadiums. While organisers have not officially released any confirmation, speculation has grown after recent changes in India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure.

Under the revised tax system, IPL match tickets now fall under a 40% GST bracket, significantly higher than the earlier 28% rate.

The tax reform places IPL tickets in the highest GST slab reserved for luxury or premium entertainment services, alongside sectors such as casinos and betting.

In a nutshell, watching IPL matches live can be more expensive compared to other cricket matches, many of which continue to fall under lower tax brackets, such as 18% GST.

Possible impact on fans

Industry experts believe that ticket prices may rise due to the hike in GST. Even moderate base ticket prices could see a noticeable jump once the 40% GST is added. However, it is very important to note that no official statement has been released yet, and this speculation could also turn out to be incorrect.

In such a scenario, fans may increasingly choose to watch matches on television or streaming platforms instead of visiting stadiums. While the IPL remains one of the most popular sporting events in the world, the higher tax burden could make the live stadium experience less accessible for a section of supporters if ticket prices rise significantly.

For stadiums to remain packed, teams may need to adjust their pricing strategies to balance demand and fan affordability.
