OpenAI, the company behind the generative AI model ChatGPT, sparked another wave of excitement in 2024 with the introduction of its video-generation model, Sora. Now, fresh reports suggest the tool could soon be integrated directly into ChatGPT.

According to a report by Reuters, OpenAI is considering bringing Sora’s capabilities into the ChatGPT interface while continuing to operate the standalone application. The move is expected to simplify the user experience by allowing people to generate videos from prompts within the same platform they already use for text and image creation.

However, the report remains speculative for now. OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside regular business hours.

What is SORA?

After transforming the world of generative AI with ChatGPT, OpenAI took another major step in 2024 with the launch of Sora, its first advanced video-generation model.

Sora is designed to convert written prompts into short, visually rich videos. The goal is to make video production more accessible for individuals, creators and businesses that may not have the resources, technical expertise or budget required for traditional filming and editing.

For small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs), the tool could be particularly valuable. Sora offers a way to create marketing videos, product demonstrations, educational clips and social media campaigns using nothing more than a text prompt. This dramatically reduces the need for production teams, editors and expensive equipment.

The model can generate complex scenes featuring multiple characters, dynamic camera movement and detailed environments, allowing users to produce visually compelling content with minimal effort.

How does SORA work?

The basic concept behind Sora is similar to how ChatGPT processes prompts.

Users provide a written description - for example, “a city street in the rain at night.” Sora then interprets the language to understand the setting, characters, actions and overall tone of the scene. The system breaks the prompt into visual components and plans how the scene should unfold.

Behind the scenes, Sora relies on diffusion-model technology trained on vast amounts of video data. The system begins with random visual noise and gradually refines each frame until a coherent and realistic video emerges.

During this process, the model simulates camera angles, movement, lighting and object consistency across frames to ensure the final video appears smooth and lifelike. Reports from Reuters suggest OpenAI is exploring the possibility of integrating Sora directly into ChatGPT to improve usability while keeping the standalone application operational.

Although the development has not yet been confirmed, the potential integration is being seen as a significant step in the evolution of generative AI. If implemented, it could mark another major milestone in how artificial intelligence tools are used to create multimedia content.
