Liverpool suffered a narrow 1–0 defeat against Galatasaray in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash in Istanbul. The result means the English club will have to overturn the deficit when the two sides meet again in the return leg at Anfield.

Early goal puts Galatasaray in control

The home side made a strong start and took the lead within the opening minutes of the match. Midfielder Mario Lemina scored in the seventh minute, heading the ball into the net from close range after a corner. The early strike gave Galatasaray the advantage and energised the home crowd at RAMS Park.

Liverpool tried to respond quickly and created a few promising chances, but they struggled to break through Galatasaray’s defensive setup.

Liverpool creates chances but fails to score

Despite going behind early, Liverpool gradually settled into the match and enjoyed spells of possession. Florian Wirtz came close to scoring with an ambitious effort from distance, but the opportunity went wide. Galatasaray also looked dangerous on the counterattack and nearly doubled their lead. Victor Osimhen had a good chance from a cross but failed to keep his header on target.

Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who stepped in for the injured Alisson Becker, made several key saves to keep the deficit to just one goal.

The second leg at Anfield to decide the tie

Liverpool pushed for an equaliser late in the match but could not find a breakthrough. Ibrahima Konaté attempted a long-range shot that flew narrowly over the crossbar, while other attacking moves also fell short.

Although the result is disappointing for Liverpool, the tie remains open. With only a single goal separating the teams, the Reds will look to use home advantage in the second leg at Anfield to turn the tie around and secure a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
