However, OpenAI has put the plan to launch the ‘adult mode’ for the ChatGPT program on hold, as the company seems to have withdrawn its plan after it sparked debate within the organization. The plan comes after the organisation suspended the Sora video program.

The plan to launch the ‘adult mode’ for the ChatGPT program has been put on hold after employees and investors expressed their concern over the risks associated with the sexually explicit artificial intelligence program, as reported by the Financial Times.

The organization has chosen to concentrate on developing the basic programs as it seeks to continue conducting research on the long-term implications of the exposure to sexually explicit materials as well as emotional dependencies associated with artificial intelligence.

Safety concerns stall ‘adult mode’ rollout

The idea of an adult-oriented chatbot was first floated by CEO Sam Altman in October 2025 as part of a broader push to expand user freedom. At the time, Altman argued that AI platforms should reflect the way society handles mature content in other formats.

“In the same way that society differentiates other appropriate boundaries, we want to do a similar thing here,” he had said.

However, the proposal failed to gain traction internally. Concerns centred on misuse, consent, and the broader societal impact of normalising sexualised AI interactions.

The debate has intensified across the tech industry, where generative AI tools have increasingly been used to create explicit or non-consensual content. Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot, for instance, has faced criticism after users generated inappropriate material targeting individuals, particularly women.

Sora shutdown signals broader reset

The halt in adult mode is in line with OpenAI's decision to discontinue its Sora video platform. The company has confirmed that it has discontinued both its consumer-facing application and its online video creation tools. This decision, made earlier this week, is in line with OpenAI's intention to move resources to areas such as robotics and real-world artificial intelligence.

Sora, a video platform that OpenAI rolled out in 2024, has been in the news for its ability to generate AI-based videos. However, it has been in trouble for the dissemination of poor-quality information on the internet.

The Walt Disney Company, which signed a three-year deal in December 2025 to allow OpenAI's characters to be used, is likely to look for partnerships with other artificial intelligence platforms.

Balancing innovation and regulation

The two decisions made by OpenAI reflect the challenge that is arising between innovation and caution in the field of artificial intelligence.

While the desire for more personalised and unregulated experiences in the field of artificial intelligence is increasing, there is a growing need for companies to be more cautious about the potential for misuse of the same.

For now, OpenAI seems to be taking a conservative path, choosing research and product stability over more provocative areas.
